Gorilla Sketch

Back to pen & ink for this one.

I started out sketching a Gorilla portrait, but…I’m not sure if that’s what I ended with?

I just don’t feel that I really captured the gorilla the way I intended to.  Something seems a little off to me.  Perhaps the lower portion of the face it a bit too narrow or the jawline is too square.  I’m not sure what it is…

None the less, he was fun to draw.  He kept my pen moving and my mind focused for a while.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this sketch.

Gorilla Sketch
This sketch was created using Micron 005, 08, brush pen, ink wash, Gelly Roll 08 for highlights, & just a touch of color from an orange Sharpie.

As always, thanks for visiting!

    1. Actually, that is one of the things that I find interesting about drawing primates. Quite often, when I am searching for reference images, I stop and reflect on the contemplative look that a lot of primates seem to have. Their dark eyes and expressive faces often make me wonder what they are thinking.

      1. That’s the good thing about what we do, we can create what we want to be present and omit what we don’t. Feel like a tree or a building is in the way of a good scene? We’re Superman armed with an eraser.

The two watercolours I’m doing at the moment are based on diabolically low-res, fuzzy photos. They’re good for using as a guide for proportions and values but I’m changing the colours and adding sharper lines in all over the place. Fingers crossed it’ll work out.

      2. You’re right, that’s something I need to keep in mind more often that I can change the scene or lighting as I see fit. Thanks for reminding me!
I’m sure your water color will work out just fine. I hope to see it on your blog soon.
