Backyard Visitors…

This morning I hosted a trio of visitors in my backyard.  I noticed them as I was pouring my coffee.  I grabbed my camera and snuck out the front door, carefully making my way towards the backyard.  I didn’t want to startle my unexpected visitors.

I shot these photos at a distance, the deer were standing at the edge of the woods in a heavily shaded area.  I was standing in bright sunlight.  The bulk of the shots were too blurry to post.  I did manage to steady my camera enough to get at least one decent shot.  As I stated before I was standing a good distance from them.  This photo was shot with my Canon 75-300 “kit” lens so the image quality isn’t the best.

Unexpected Magic During The Morning Commute…

As I’ve mentioned before I live in a rural area in the Foothills of northwestern North Carolina.  Each weekday I commute about 35 miles south to a nearby town for work.  The drive takes about 40 minutes and takes me through mostly rural farmland.

As commutes go, I consider myself lucky to have such a peaceful and often scenic drive.  I only travel on 2-lane country roads, that I occasionally share with farm machinery, or, the occasional deer.

This photo was taken a few years ago during my morning drive to work.  At that time, I was just beginning to become interested in photography.  This was shot with an inexpensive Canon point-and-shoot camera which was my only camera at the time other than my mobile phone.

There are many technical errors in this photo, however, I still like the image.  I pulled behind a small volunteer fire department to get this shot.  The sun was rising and the morning fog had settled into the valley.  I thought the scene was well worth documenting and a great visual delight to start the day.

Southport Bench Warmer…

We recently spent a few days in one of my favorite seaside towns, Southport, NC. Southport is a charming community located in the extreme southeast corner of North Carolina.  The town has a lot of history and has appeared in many television and film productions.  We try to visit every spring.  The town is not heavily commercialized at all and therefore, retains its charm as a sleepy, but welcoming, seaside town.

While there we strolled around The Southport Spring Festival which features arts & crafts from regional artisans.  That’s where I spotted this gentleman on the bench, I assume he is waiting on the missus to finish exploring the festival while he sits patiently and observes.

Rainy morning with a bit of rambling…

This morning is starting out lazy and peaceful.  I am content as I sit in the room I use as a studio space/study.  Outside the rain is really coming down.  Today’s forecast calls for a significant chance of thunderstorms.  I’m hoping we get at least one good storm today.  I enjoy a nice spring thunderstorm, the sound of rolling thunder is somehow comforting to me.  I guess it is a reassuring reminder of how small and helpless we really are.  Perhaps that may sound like an odd thing to say, but I’m glad we are still at the mercy of nature.  That’s the way it is intended to be.

In this room is where I typically start and end each day.  It is located on the far end of our house and therefore, somewhat sheltered from distractions such as TV, an enthusiastic child, etc.  I spend a lot of time here throughout the week.  I do all my drawing at the drafting table to the left, edit photos and compose blog post at the desk to the right.  You can’t tell in the photo, but, the window offers a view of our backyard which becomes dense woods once you reach its limits.

The rain has slacked off a bit now and I can hear the song a single bird.  The sky is still threatening and I believe this break in the rainfall is only temporary.  More birds are joining in now and their interim concert is starting.

I plan to begin and new sketch this afternoon, for now, I am content just to sit here for a while and ponder about life.

Chaotic Comfort…

This is a photo of my wife’s workspace.  She is very creative, thrives in a chaotic environment, and always has multiple projects in various stages of completion.  She enjoys creating acrylic pour paintings and several of her pieces decorate our walls.  She also enjoys making earrings and pendants for necklaces.  When I noticed the “Hippie Place” pendant this morning, I thought it would be fitting for today’s Sunday Snap.

Spring, it’s right around the corner…

I actually shot this image in the spring of 2016.  But, I thought it would be appropriate to share in today’s post since all signs are pointing to an early spring in my part of the world.

Also, I have been too busynah, the truth is, I haven’t taken the time to shoot any new photos this week.  I am planning to change that very soon.  I need to be more conscious of the fact that my iPhone can take a decent image and I need to be more mindful of that in my daily life.

Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Thank for viewing, Mike L.

Too cold for a swim…

I took this shot of my 8-year-old son this past December while visiting Sulivan’s Island, SC

We were actually staying in Charleston, SC and took a short drive to Mount Pleasant, Sulivan’s Island, and Isle of Palms.  The air temperatures where pleasant for December, but, way to cool to actually get wet.

We had walked out onto the beach, just exploring a bit.  I noticed the sea foam on the shore and sat my camera on the sand to get the photo with my son at looking out towards the ocean.

I realize you can’t see his face or even know that it’s him.  But, that’s one of the things about the photo that appeals to me.  I think it captures a bit of that childhood curiosity and the explorer’s spirit as he stands there looking out towards such a big world.

Visiting my favorite coffee shop…

One of my more savory guilty pleasures is visiting Talia Espresso on a Saturday afternoon.  It’s a family-owned coffee shop in my hometown, serving a nice variety of coffee drinks and baked treats.

My family and I like to visit on the weekends, it’s a beautiful shop in a historic building downtown.  The walls are lined with bookcases filled with books and art.  The books are provided for customers and the art is by local artist and many of the pieces are available for purchase.

We visited yesterday, while there I enjoyed a vanilla latte and a cinnamon coffee cake, I also snapped this photo with my phone.

I started Sunday Snap a few weeks ago as a way to ensure that I maintained a balance between drawings and photography.  My weekly schedule is usually full and that limits my time to get out with a camera and shoot.  I wanted a way to create regular photography content between “real” outings with my camera.  Now, I’m thinking about using Sunday Snap as a way to share more about my life outside of this blog.

I would love to hear your feedback.  Comments are welcome.

Thanks for viewing, I hope you have a great day!

For this Sunday Snap, I traveled back to 2015…

This photo was taken back in September of 2015 when I was just becoming interested in photography.  I shot this image with a Canon PowerShot SX400 IS which is a point and shoot camera.  I originally purchased this camera to document hiking trips.  That is what spurred my interest in photography.  I still have this camera and enjoy using it on occasion.

The camera lacks the ability to manually set aperture or shutter speed, it doesn’t even have a proper viewfinder, just a screen.  But, I like it none the less!

The subject of today’s snap is an abandoned building about one mile from my home.  It fronts on the same highway that I travel each day during my daily commute.  I wish I knew the history of this building but unfortunately, I don’t.  To me, it has the look of an old country store.  I can imagine a single family running the store on the ground level while living on the second floor above.

Abandoned buildings like this always make me wonder what happened.

How did this building fall into ruins?

Who is the owner?

Why has it been left to be consumed and reclaimed by nature?
